Special Collections and Archives

Drawing of Flora Lamson Hewlett Library, David Gregory

The Graduate Theological Union (GTU) was founded in Berkeley, California, in 1962. GTU is a consortium of eight schools of theology representing the Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions; five centers of Jewish, Islamic, Dharma, Art & Religion, and Theology and Natural Sciences; and four affiliates of Swedenborgian, Buddhist, Biblical Faith/Spiritual Formation, and Orthodox.

The school was founded to support graduate theological education and promote ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.

Formally established in 1989, Special Collections and Archives at the GTU record the American religious experience in the West, religious dialogue, the Christian and wider religious intellectual heritage, and the ministries of the GTU's member schools and centers.
